Gemfields Picnic Area Campground

Last Updated on 10 September 2026 by Rob

Gemfields Picnic Area Campground is a small camping area to the west of Noreseman. It provides a great alternative to the Norseman RV Rest Area if you do not comply with the strict self-containment rules. We stayed here for that reason.

Campground Layout and Features

The campground has only a few sites and only one spot for a small caravan. This caravan site is on the loop road with a picnic table in the middle of it.

The area is fairly flat. We were able to remain hitched up during our stay.

As stated earlier, no facilities are provided at this site. It is very basic and is surrounded by long grass. There is a hill behind the campground that offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. Site are available on a first-come first-served basis.

Gemfields Picnic Area Campsite Location

The campground is 9km west of Norseman. From Norseman, it can be accessed via Mort Harslett Dr or, if that road is closed, Hyden-Norseman Road. It is easily accessed from the west off of Hyden-Norseman Road. The roads are unsealed. We found all of the roads between Hyden and Norseman well-maintained.

The map below shows the campground’s location. You can zoom out for a more general location.

What to Watch Out For at Gemfields Picnic Area Campground

This campground is quite wild. There is a lot of grass around. We did have a short-lived issue with some bees. There are reports of the area being slippery is wet weather.

During our stay, we saw many bees, and there are reports indicating that this occurs often. If you have an allergy, it would probably be best to skip this camp.

Final Words

We liked this camp. It was a second choice after we learnt that we did not meet the requirements of the Norseman RV Rest Area but it turned out to be a great option.

This campground can be used on our itinerary from Perth to Adelaide.

Closeby Campgrounds

If you are heading east to Hyden you may like to consider staying at Wave Rock Short Stay.

For those venturing onto the Nullabor we have the Caiguna East Bush Camp.
