Gibb River Campground

Last Updated on 30 July 2026 by Rob

Gibb River Campground is a wonderful campground just off Gibb River Road. It was our favourite campground of our Gibb River Road trip. Do yourself a favour and spend a night or two here to relax.

Campground Layout and Features

The campground has about 20 camp sites spread across three areas. All of the sites are on dusty sandy ground with some shade available.

The largest area is in the southeast corner. This area is the highest above the river and has about thirteen sites. It is the most open of the area and it gets a bit more cramped than the other two areas.

The area in the northeast is shadier that the previous area and is lower also. There is still plenty of sun for solar panels. It has about six sites.

The smallest area is in the northwest corner, is open and has two or perhaps three sites. It is located near the water is while we were there it was always full.

There are no facilities at this site.

Swimming is possible but ensure that there are no crocodiles around. The water is quite shallow and the pools were not connected during our visit. There are sandy beaches making it a very relaxing place to stay.

There is a lot of birdlife here.

This is a popular place so plan to arrive early to secure the better sites.

Camping on the sand beside the water is not permitted. This is to protect nesting nesting.

Gibb River Campground Campsite Location

The campground is less than 3km off Gibb River Road along the Kalumburu Road. It is at the river crossing.

What to Watch Out For at Gibb River Campground Campground

There are no concerns at this site. If you have children you will need to be mindful of the open water bodies.

Final Words

We enjoyed our time here a lot. We stayed two nights before heading north the Mitchell Falls and a further two when we returned.

This campground is used in our comprehensive Gibb River itinerary.

Closeby Campgrounds

People continuing east on Gibb River Road may like to read about Top of the Word Campsite and/or Pentecost River Free Camp.

To the west of this site we have Mt Elizabeth Station.

For those heading north to Mitchell Falls, you may like King Edward River Camp. If you are travelling north, make sure you talk to people who have done it recently. The road conditions do change quickly, and past experience may not reflect road conditions when you are there. We heard horror stories about the Kalumburu Road while planning this segment of our trip. However, during our visit, the road was significantly better than the Gibb River Road and we were able to take our caravan. Only the last 8km to King Edward River Camp was a little rough. Of course, the road into Mitchell Falls is rough and we wouldn’t recommend taking a caravan there. We did it as a day trip. For full details of a trip to Mitchell Falls, see our three-day itinerary.
