Rowallan Park Campground Mackay

Last Updated on 1 August 2026 by Rob

Rowallan Park (located in Farleigh) is a bush-style base west of Mackay that trades the busy coastal strip for the quiet hills of the Pioneer Valley.

Located just 15 minutes north-west of the city, the property is the home of the local Scouting association but opens its gates to the public for camping. Whether you are using the park’s famous mountain bike trails or simply using it as a strategic, low-cost option while exploring the Mackay region, Rowallan Park delivers a serene, community-focused atmosphere that feels worlds away from the highway.

Campground Layout and Features

Rowallan Park Campground is a large grassed site. The ground slopes down towards a lake, so you may need to level your vehicle.

There are eight powered sites with water connections. These sites are fairly flat at the top of the hill. Because of their convenience, they are popular, but the sites are close together. The fee for the powered site is $15 per night for one person, then $5 for every extra person.

Unpowered sites are unmarked. Just pick a spot that you like. The fee for unpowered sites is $10 per night for one person then $5 for every extra person.

A unisex toilet and shower block is provided.

Bins and water are provided.

Rowallan Park Campground Location

Rowallan Park Campground is located 9 km north-west of Mackay. It is accessed by good quality roads to approximately 1.1 km from the site. From that point, there is an unsealed track that is a bit rough. It can be driven by 2WD, if care is taken.

The map below shows the location of the campground. You can zoom out for a more general location.

What to Watch Out For at Rowallan Park Campground

Due to the sloping ground, traction can be an issue for some vehicles in wet conditions. While at this campground, a motorhome attempted to drive out from the bottom of the area near the lake. Due to the wet conditions, winching was required to get the vehicle out.

If you have young children, be vigilant because the lake is unfenced.

Final Words

We really enjoyed our stay at this campground and recommend it. It is convenient to access Mackay, and for us, it is a better option than a caravan park closer to Mackay.

This campground is featured on our Cairns to Brisbane Road Trip.

Closeby Campgrounds

If you are heading inland from Mackay, you may like Finch Hatton Showgrounds. Those travelling north may consider staying at Ball Bay Campground. If heading south St Lawrence Recreational Reserve may be an option.
