Black River Campsite at Peggs Beach Conservation Area offers calm river reflections and wild coastal views on the Tassie north coast.

Located halfway between Stanley and Smithton, this expansive reserve offers the best of both worlds: sheltered, tree-lined sites along the riverbanks and more exposed, vista-heavy spots overlooking the Bass Strait. This site provides a firm, easy-access base for exploring the Tarkine Edge or the iconic Nut at Stanley. Whether you’re launching a kayak into the tea-colored waters of the Black River or taking a sunset stroll along the pristine white sands of Peggs Beach, this campsite delivers a raw, high-latitude coastal experience without the price tag of a commercial park.
Black River Campsite is one of the two camping areas within the Peggs Beach Conservation Area. It is operated by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

Toilets are provided, so there is no need to be self-contained. There is no water available, so you should be able to have enough for your needs during your stay.
The site is close to the ocean, making swimming available for the brave.
Activities in the area include walking, bird watching and fishing.
Pets and fires are permitted at this site. Fires must be above ground level in a suitable fire pit.
Tents are permitted. There is a boat ramp available.

The sites are organised in clusters along much of the access road. Each site has more than one camping site on it (see photo above), although during quiet times, you should have the whole area to yourself. At the end of the access road, there are large open areas for turning around.

From the 1st of May until the 1st of November, the back area (from site 13 and back) of the campground is closed. Turning larger vehicles on reaching the gate may be problematic.
Other than toilets, no other facilities are provided.
The maximum stay is one month, from the 1st of November to the 30th of April. At other times, the maximum stay is seven days.
The fee for camping is $13 per night for the first two people. Each additional adult is $5 per night. Extra children are free. If you stay a week, the first 2 adults are $50 with an extra $20 for each additional adult. Sites are on a first come first serve basis. No bookings are available. The fees are payable at the self-registration station.
Black River Campsite Location
The campground is just 17km from the town of Stanley. The road is sealed until the turnoff into the conservation area. The roads within the area are unsealed but suitable for 2WD vehicles. It is possible to turn large vehicles at the end of the access roads when the back of the area is open.
