Childers Campground

Last Updated on 1 August 2026 by Rob

Childers RV Stop (on Crescent Street) is one of the most practical stops for self-contained travellers.

Situated just one street back from the Bruce Highway, the two camping areas offer a quiet alternative to the highway noise while placing you within a two-minute stroll of the town’s famous leopard tree-lined main street.

Childers Campground is a great location to stop on your travels to or from northern Queensland. It is an excellent facility provided by the town of Childers. During your stay, you may like to explore the town and stock up on any needed items.

Childers Campground

The campground is spread across two areas. They are very close together, but their characteristics differ. These differences are detailed in a later section.

To stay at these sites, you must be self-contained.

Pets are permitted.

Tents are permitted at one of the sites but not the other. Unfortunately, the site that would be more conducive to tents is the one where they are not permitted.

Campground Layout and Features

As mentioned previously, this campground is spread across two areas with different characteristics.

The main area is essentially a car park where overnight camping is permitted. This area has 16 sites. Of these sites, 9 are pull-through sites that accommodate large vehicles. Each of these sites can be used by a long setup or by two campervans. There are an additional 7 sites that can accommodate small vans, campervans or a motorhome. As this is a car park, don’t expect much space between you and your neighbours.

In the main area, there are a couple of taps you can use to fill your tanks. These taps are located on the traffic islands that exist in the area. At least one of these can be accessed from the road. Don’t be put off by the commercial water point. Also, be aware that there is a tap at the eastern end of the area that has no threads and is a push-button type of tap.

There is also a dump point and rubbish bins.

In our opinion, the second area is a better option. When we arrived, this area had plenty of space while the main area was packed. We didn’t understand why. This area is grassed, and the marked bays are large (site shown in the photo at the start of the review). It is a more comfortable location than the main area. There are approximately 15 sites in this area.

Unlike the main area, this area had no water or dump point. It only has rubbish bins. However, the main area is about 50m away.

While neither area has toilets, some are located 100 – 150 m away in a small park.

There are two play areas for children at the western end of the main area and directly across the road near the toilet block.

Between the park containing the toilet block and the second area, there is an RSL.

Stays at both locations are limited to 24 hours, so this is just a rest stop during your travels.

Childers Campground Location

This campground is located one street back from the Bruce Highway in central Childers. The map below shows the location. You may zoom out for a more general location.

What to Watch Out For at Childers Campground

We did not identify any negatives about this campground. It would be nice to have stayed longer than one night to explore the town some more.

If you have children, you should keep a close eye on them, as both areas are near the road. Also, in the main area, everyone is close, so it would be difficult to see a child about to dash out between the vehicles.

If you camp near the rubbish bins, you may be woken early by the truck emptying them.

Both areas were full by mid-afternoon during our stay, so it is a good idea to arrive as early as possible.

Final Words

If you are travelling through Childers and need a break, this campground is a great option. As indicated, our recommendation is the second area as the main area is cramped and on tarmac.

This is a one night stay on the Cairns to Brisbane Road Trip.

Closeby Campgrounds

If you’re travelling along the coast to the north and planning to visit the Yeppon area, we have details on two campgrounds: Bush to Beach Farmstay and Ferns Hideaway Resort. A bit further north is Marlborough Hotel Campground.

Details checked 28/12/25.
