Sandy Point Reserve – Hay

Last Updated on 29 July 2026 by Rob

Sandy Point Reserve is located within walking distance of Hay. It is a convenient location to explore the town and the surrounding area. The camping area is a large open area near the Murrumbidgee River, providing a place to swim. Best of all is that it is a free camp.

To stay at Sandy Point Reserve, there is no need to be self-sufficient as toilets are provided. However if you camp towards the rear of the campground you may find it more convenient.

Campground Layout and Features

Sandy Point Reserve is approved to accommodate a maximum of 75 camping sites, though I doubt anyone will count them before setting up camp. I am not sure how it is policed.

The area is set in a large open area with plenty of shade. Even with the shade, there are plenty of sites with enough sun for solar charging. The area is fairly flat overall, but the ground is a little uneven. Be aware that some of the tracks have large holes formed during wet periods.

The site has four unisex toilets and one reserved for females. During our visit, they were clean and well-stocked with toilet paper. For some sites, the toilets are quite a walk away, so if you do not have your own, be prepared to walk each time.

A condition of the campground is that no greywater is to be discharged on the ground. There is a dump point in town, and water to fill tanks is also located in town.

The photograph below shows some of the other rules of this campground.

Recycling and rubbish bins are provided near the toilet block.

Behind the toilet block is the day-use area. This area contains picnic shelters and gas BBQs.

The maximum stay at this free campground is three days.

Sandy Point Reserve Campsite Location

Sandy Point Reserve is located near the centre of Hay which is a 1.2km drive/walk away. The map below shows the campground’s location. You can zoom out for a more general location.

What to Watch Out For at Sandy Point Reserve

As you enter the site there is a sign that states that the road is to be used in dry conditions only. I would not recommend entering this site if it is wet. There are plenty of signs that the ground gets very soft when it is wet.

Final Words

If you are visiting Hay, this is the site to stay at if you like free or low-cost camping. We enjoyed our stay here and recommend it.
